If you’ve ever thought, “gee, something’s missing,” upon looking around a room in your home, but it’s decorated exactly how you wanted it, chances are that your walls are…well, flat. Now, I’m not saying that the finish is flat, or that the color is off, I’m just saying that the room is missing one key element, and in my professional opinion, that something is an accent wall.
Accent walls are an inexpensive way to add a little bit of drama and dimension to an otherwise flat space. Whether you paint your accent wall a darker shade of the other walls’ color, or a different color entirely, an accent wall can tie together an entire rooms’ décor better than any piece of furniture or rug out there.
How to Choose Your Accent Wall
While an accent wall is just one wall painted differently than the rest of the room’s walls, we don’t recommend painting just any old wall. The best accent walls are the ones that you see first when entering a room, or the wall to which the eye is drawn upon entering a room. Start by looking around the room—is there a place that the eye is naturally drawn, such as a wall with large windows, unique architectural details or a favored piece of art? What do you want to show off about a room? What is the focal point of a room?
In a bedroom, the wall with your headboard is a good choice. In a room with awkward architecture, an accent wall can disguise weird features by drawing the eyes away from them. In a long, narrow room, painting the short wall at the far end will make a room seem closer, cozier and less oblong.
Choosing What Color to Paint Your Accent Wall
Many homeowners want to play it safe, and so they choose a paint color that is a few shades darker than the other walls. While there are seven colors in the paint spectrum, most paints are made up of multiple colors. For example, blue isn’t just blue—it usually has gray or green or red or yellow in it. This can make finding the right accent color difficult. The easiest way to overcome this challenge is to get several color chips with a range of three to six shades in the same color family. Take these chips home and hold them up to your current wall color. This is a failsafe way to find the color you feel best compliments the surrounding walls.
If you really want to make a room pop, choose a different color altogether (but do make sure it’s complementary!). The best way to do this is to choose a color that is the opposite of your existing wall color (think of the color wheel) for the ultimate dramatic effect.
Accent walls don’t have to be a solid color. Wallpaper is making a huge comeback, and, depending on your taste, both bright and mellow patterns can really accent the rest of a room.
Whatever color you choose to paint your accent wall, or whatever wallpaper you choose to go with, just make sure that it stands out.
