Older homes are honestly my favorite, as they’re full of charm, character and history—you know, all those cliché thing you ever hear about older homes. Charm aside, if you live in an older home in the Michigan or Ohio area, you probably don’t want to stay stuck in the Victorian era, and are looking for a few ways to bring some modern style into your home without completely removing the inherent old school character. Some paint, drywall repairs and new trim can help you do just that.
However, renovating your older home requires a lot of thought. Our professional painters are experienced in renovating older homes and apartments without taking away their charm, and we want to share with you a few of our tips on how we do it:
1.Repaint The Doors
If you live in an older home, your home is probably not “open concept,” and there are probably a lot of doorways to walk through. Many homeowners don’t give much thought to their interior doors, but a door’s paint can really make or break the feel of a room! By painting each door to match the décor of the room it faces into, you can add instant style while breathing new life into an otherwise dated space.
Painting your front door is also a great way to increase your home’s curb appeal, and can add even more character to your older home.

2.Update The Trim
So many older homes have beautiful trim and crown moulding, but it just needs to be brought back to life. By repairing the trim where it’s rotted away, or where years of wear have caused it to pull away from the ceiling, and refinishing it with a fresh coat of paint, you can restore your older home without losing any of its original character.
3.Give New Life To Your Ceilings
Like doors, many homeowners don’t give enough credit to their ceilings, but in actuality, ceilings – or “the fifth wall,” as they’ve been called – can really affect the feel of a home. If your ceilings are dingy and boast the same paint from 50 years ago, your home is going to feel dingy and old too—even if the walls are freshly painted! When painting your home, don’t forget to give the ceilings a fresh coat too. If you’re feeling really wild, keep your walls a neutral color (think off white, light gray, beige) and paint your ceilings something eye-catching, like red, deep blue or yellow.
4.Refinish The Cabinets
Have you ever heard the phrase, “kitchens sell homes”? You probably have, because it’s a well-known fact. And half of the kitchen is its cabinets. If your cabinets are worn and dated, they can really drag down the look and feel of your home. If you don’t want to replace them entirely, try giving them a fresh coat of paint and some new hardware. We did this with our cabinets, and it’s made a world of difference! Now, our kitchen doesn’t look dingy or old, but rather, it’s bright and refreshing.
5.Give Your Deck A New Coat Of Paint
Decks need to be refinished every 5 years or so, not only to freshen up its appearance, but also because it keeps it from becoming a safety hazard. If it’s been awhile since your deck has seen a paintbrush, consider slapping on a coat of primer and some paint this spring. You and your home will both benefit from the quick paint job!
6.Repair Drywall
There is nothing tackier looking than holes in drywall or plaster. If your home is riddled with drywall damage, make the necessary repairs and then paint. Doing so will give your home a much needed facelift, and save you from people from wondering just what goes on in your home at nights.
7.Paint The Exterior Of Your Home
Just because your home is a historical relic doesn’t mean it needs to look like one. Peeling and chipping paint is a far cry from “charming,” and leaving it like that can make your neighbors wish there was a HOA to complain to. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor, and give the exterior of your home a fresh coat of paint. Doing so will increase your home’s curb appeal and protect it from weather, wear and tear.
