A freshly painted home is honestly one of the best places in the world to be, as it’s new, shiny and best of all, clean. No one and no thing has had a chance to come in and wipe its fingerprints along the surface, or leave little prints near the baseboards, or splatter food and grease all over. That clean, crisp, scruff-free feeling is nice, but sadly, it only lasts for so long. Before you know it, you’ll be chasing after your toddler with a sponge as they run down the halls with a crayon; you’ll be telling your spouse to please use a grease-guard when he cooks; and you yourself will cringe when you accidently lean against the wall with a muddy hand to take off your gardening boots. It’s frustrating, but scuffed up walls are a part of life. Luckily, there is a way to keep your walls looking freshly painted forever!
How? Try these cleaning tips that our professional painters use to keep our clients’ walls clean and scuff free for years into the future:
Basic Cleaning Care
Tip #1: Wait at least 2 weeks after painting to clean your walls, otherwise you risk ruining the finished product.
Tip #2: Start cleaning by using a vacuum brush attachment to clean off any cobwebs or debris from the trim and baseboards.
Tip #3: Dust the surface of your walls with a wet washcloth, or even a Swiffer sweeper.
Tip #4: If you just want to remove a few fingerprints, take a damp sponge or washcloth and dip it in a solution of warm water and soap. Scrub gently. (Always make sure to test the solution on a small area of your wall, to be sure it’s compatible with the paint.)
Tip #5: For more difficult scuff marks, rub a past of baking powder and water onto the mark, then gently scrub off with your sponge or washcloth. If this doesn’t work, try using a magic eraser.
Tip #6: When washing your walls, always wash from the bottom to the top, and take breaks in between walls, not in the middle of them. This will prevent streaking, and also allow you to maintain your momentum.
Tip #7: For extremely difficult stains, try the following solution:
1 gallon warm water
1 cup washing soda (think borax)
1 cup non-sudsing ammonia
1 cup white vinegar
Work this solution into the walls, from the bottom to the top. Once one wall is done, or once you’ve covered all the stained areas of a wall, rinse with a second bucket of warm water.
We hope these tips help you keep your walls looking clean and freshly painted for years to come! If they don’t do the trick, it might just be time to invest in interior painting!
