Before painting a room or even just a wall, you want to be sure that all surfaces are smooth, clean and free of imperfections. Though a fresh coat of paint will generally give any room a new and polished finish, if you paint over nail holes or other blemishes – small or large – they’ll be a lot more noticeable than before. However, not everyone is a professional painter, and therefore, not everyone knows how exactly to go about ridding their walls of these imperfections before busting out the paint and brushes. Luckily for you, filling nail holes is relatively easy and inexpensive.
Things You Will Need:
When Filling Holes In Drywall:
Step 1: With the handle of your putty knife, very gently press and smooth back the broken paper of the drywall around the nail holes if needed.
Step 2: To the smaller holes (less than 1/8 of an inch), apply a small amount of drywall spackle. Use your finger to press the spackle into the holes, and then smooth the surface with your hand. Let dry.
Step 3: For larger holes, dip the end of your putty knife into the joint compound, scoop out a small amount, and then press into the larger holes. Wipe away any excess with the edge of your putty knife. Allow the compound to dry according to the directions on the package.
Step 4: Once the compound has dried, sand the patched nail holes with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe away the sanding dust with a damp rag.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 two additional times to ensure the larger nail holes are completely filled. Don’t forget to sand between each coat. On the final coat, apply just slightly more compound than you did the first two times. Once it dries, sand the hole and surrounding area until the surface is completely smooth.
When Filling Holes In Wood:
Step 1: Fill any holes in wood with wood putty or wood filler. Like you did with the drywall spackle, apply these fillers with your finger.
Step 2: Allow the putty to dry. Once dried completely, add another coat if necessary.
Step 3: Wait for the putty to dry (if you did a second coat), then sand with 220-grit sandpaper.
Once all the holes are filled, clean the wall’s/wood’s surface (if you didn’t do so beforehand) and then prime for painting. Follow the primer’s/paint’s directions from here.
While filling nail holes is relatively easy, it can be time consuming, especially if there are a lot of nail holes to fill. At Liberty Paint & Construction, LLC, our professional painters make sure that every surface we paint is clean and free of imperfections before applying a single coat of paint or primer. Filling nail holes is a part of our job description.
